Mr. Loh Chee Kwong of SM Sung Siew has won a prize from Malaysia Toray Science Foundation in recognition of his outstanding achievement in the teaching of Science in the secondary educational institution and contribute to the progress and development of science and technology in Malaysia through the Grace Method in determining the arrangement of loads in electrical circuit.
One of the difficulties in electrical studies faced by secondary school students is determining the arrangement of loads in an electrical circuit, whether they are in series or in parallel arrangement. This is due to the misconception of the term parallel and series arrangement of loads. Often teachers are inclined to introduce the arrangement of loads in a simple geometrical form. As a result, when students are given a much complex circuit the students are baffled by the arrangement. Furthermore, this confusion would create a misconception in the understanding of electrics and thus creating an undesirable disliking towards the subject matter. The author would like to propose a method which uses simple axiomatic approach and basic algebra to rearrange the circuits. Through this method, complicated circuits can be rearranged in a friendlier and easier noticeable circuit. The method has been introduced to students and teachers and the results were very encouraging. Those who practice this method find it easy to learn and applied and had fun using it. This paper will present simple way of applying this method namely Grace Method.
Mr. Loh's Grace Method article can be found in the Sung Siew Secondary School Official Website under School Archive - Articles.
